This is a wonderful powerpoint presentation by Eric C. Westman, M.D M.H.S. of the Department of Medicine at Duke University Medical Center in Durham NC presented at the American Society of Bariatric Physicians on November 1, 2006.It presents some great scientific research on the topic of GI in comparison to Low Carb diets in the management of diabetes and makes the following astutue analysis (again see the data in the presentation):Very low carbohydrate diets are low glycemic dietsLow glycemic diets are not necessarily very low arbohydrate diets (i.e., a low glycemic index diet may still have 50% of calories from carbohydrate)Effects in normals and diabetics will probably be differentIf “low GI” is better than “high GI,” what about “no GI”

From the introduction: In this chapter we will discuss the diagnosis and treatment of a few of probably more than fifty known long-term complications of diabetes that can cause distress or disability but which are frequently undiagnosed, misdiagnosed or mistreated. We will focus on approaches accessible to the primary care physician or to the physiatrist. Some of these approaches to treating and diagnosing such complications are not described in the scientific literature and are probably unique to my practice.
Low carb diets in diabetes management.
This is an older research paper by Dr. Bernstein that summarizes his approach to treating diabetes. I tend to have a higher % of fat and lower % of protein in my own personal diet then what is described here, and this predates his book which I would defer to over this. But this makes a nice addition to our downloads section and has great summary info as well.
A nice synopsis presentation by Dr. Katharine Morrison on how you can achieve normal blood sugars with diet and insulin.This is a great summary of the extensive material available in Dr. Morrison's more comprehensive How To series (content/view/155/51/) regarding the broader topic of overall diabetes management.
