I just wanted to direct people's attention (especially those people that insulin dependant diabetics) to a great cause I just learned about called Insulin for Life. A quick synopsis of their mission is taken directly from their website:
"Most people in most countries of the world who need life-saving insulin cannot obtain it
Insulin for Life Australia is a not-for-profit organisation that collects and distributes insulin and other diabetes supplies that would otherwise be wasted. These are sent as a result of emergencies, and also on an ongoing, sustainable basis to recognised organisations and with agreed monitoring systems."
The following is an sobering image of a child in 1922 before the discovery of insulin--to the right is the SAME child 32 days later after receiving insulin injections. Sadly, today the majority of people in most countries still cannot get insulin and face this same prospect for their own health.

One final observation or connection between the above and our current situation with the actual treatment of diabetes. As I reflect on the mother in this photo I am struck by how devastating it must have been to see a child wither down to that which is show above--truly heart wrenching. I think look at the photo to the right and think how miraculous this injection must have seemed--to be able to restore a child in that condition so quickly to such a vibrant body, it must have seem miraculous.
I feel the same way about the low carbohydrate / low insulin approach to diabetes management--and yet it is quite often the medical establishment that is gating efforts to get this method of treatment more widely spread--the opposite of the role they played in 1922. In 3 months after starting with Dr. Bernstein's low carb/low insuilin way of eating I went from an A1c of 8.0 to 5.0--3 months! With an A1c of 8.0 it is nothing more then a surity that bad things were to come--a slow and agonizing progression (similar to the photo above in so many ways, but slower).
I don't have an answer or additional comment--but just found the similarities and the medical professional juxtaposition strange and sad.
Going back to Insulin for Life--if there is a way to have this site (D-solve) generate any money I would love to just funnel it all to Insulin for Life--I feel very privileged to live in a country that has easy access to insulin it is the least that those of us in this position can do.
